Markey Cancer Patient Programs
Volunteer Opportunity -- Snacks for Patients and Their Families
The Foundation provides snacks, coffee, and water to nearly 40,000 patients and their families annually. In particular, the snacks help chemotherapy patients while taking the lengthy intravenous procedures. Many of the patients suffer a bad taste in their mouths from the medicine. The snacks help eliminate the taste and provide comfort.
Organizing these snacks is a hands-on and rewarding project. Thank you to the Woodford County Women's Club for their on-going help with this important activity!
For more information about this and other volunteer opportunities, please call the Foundation office at 859-323-6448.
Ovarian Cancer Screening in Lexington
Convenient screening locations and free parking are available at the screening program’s
Markey Cancer Center website. Because ovarian cancer most commonly affects women age 50 and older, the screening program’s guidelines relate to both age and heredity:
- All women over the age of 50 (including those who have no symptoms and no personal history of ovarian cancer) are eligible for a free ovarian cancer screening.
- Women over the age of 25 who have a family history of ovarian cancer are also eligible for a free screening.
To schedule a screening, call locally (859) 323-4687 or toll-free 1-800-76-OVARY (1-800-766- 8279) from anywhere else in the Commonwealth. You may also learn more about the UK Ovarian Cancer Screening Program online at

Free Prostate Screening held at Markey Cancer Center
The Markey Cancer Center offers free prostate cancer screenings, by appointment only, two times per year. Next screening is: April 27 from 4:30pm - 7:00pm in the Whitney-Hendrickson Building.
Prostate cancer is the second-leading killer of adult men. Typically slow-growing, prostate cancer often goes undetected for years. The goal of screening is to detect prostate cancer early, when there are more options for treatment, the risks of complications are lower, and the chance for survival is much higher. The screening, which is recommended to be performed yearly for men of screening-eligible age, consists of a brief, painless physical examination and a blood test.
These free screenings are available to men who have not had a screening in at least two years and who are over 40 (or over 35 for higher-risk individuals, including minority men and those with a family history of prostate cancer). Appointments may be made by calling 859-257-4488 or toll-free, 1-866-340-4488.
