NCI Designation

What Does it Mean to be an NCI Designated Cancer Center?

The prestige and research power of the NCI-designation help cancer centers obtain additional financial support from other funding sources. NCI-designated cancer centers are able to recruit premier cancer researchers and influence the cancer research agenda worldwide through participation in national and international meetings and advisory boards.

"We want to take the Markey Cancer Center to the next level
and become an outstanding, nationally recognized program
that is the choice destination for patients in

Kentucky and surrounding states."

Since arriving at UK in May 2009, I have had the opportunity to meet hundreds of faculty, staff, patients and friends of the Markey Cancer Center. All have been welcoming, gracious and supportive, for which I am truly thankful.

They have given their thoughts and provided valuable input on what we can do to make Markey a better place both now and in the future. Many have inquired what our goals at Markey are to ensure we fulfill our mission of patient care, education, outreach and research. While we have many important goals that we need to accomplish, one goal that focuses on all areas of patient care, education, outreach and research is achieving status as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Cancer Center. When asked “what does it mean to be an NCI designated Cancer Center?” we provide several answers including:

  • Increased draw of patients to Markey
  • Offerings of advanced clinical studies with increased accrual to clinical studies
  • Increased recruitment of nationally & internationally recognized physicians and scientists
  • National prestige as one of the best Cancer Centers in the country, and the only one in the Commonwealth of Kentucky
  • Expanded opportunities for special initiative grants
  • Increased private donations
  • Increased community engagement (volunteers, patient advisory groups, education and intervention programs)
  • Increase in the local and state economy

We want to take the Markey Cancer Center to the next level and become an outstanding, nationally recognized program that is the choice destination for patients in Kentucky and surrounding states. With dedicated faculty and staff and friends of Markey, we truly can make great strides forward to achieve our shared vision and goals.

Sincerely,

B. Mark Evers, MD
